You can expect your car belt, also known as the serpentine belt, to last a good 50,000 miles or more. When it eventually comes time to replace your belt, you’re likely to notice a few of the following problems. If you experience any of these issues, pop your hood to check your belt and visit your local Ford dealer for a new one.

Problems With the Electronics

The serpentine belt transmits power from the engine to various other car components. One very important part powered by the serpentine belt is the alternator, which generates electrical power for your battery, headlights, dashboard, and many other components.

So if your belt cracks or slips and stops powering the alternator, the battery warning light will probably come to life on your dashboard. The battery may continue to power your car for a while. But once the battery runs out of its stored power, with the alternator no longer recharging it, all your other electronics will start to fail.

Steering Becomes Tougher

The car engine belt also runs the power steering pump. The ordinarily effortless steering and handling of your Ford depend on the support of this power steering. So if you suddenly find it harder to steer, especially when moving at slower speeds, your belt might have malfunctioned.

Cabin Getting Too Hot

The air conditioner also depends on the serpentine belt, which powers the AC compressor. So when a belt stops working, your cabin will soon heat up.

Engine Overheating

When a serpentine belt fails, not only the cabin will have a temperature problem. The engine might also start to overheat. This is because the engine cooling system relies on the water pump, which is powered by the serpentine belt.

Loud Squealing Sounds

When a worn or loosened serpentine belt slips out of place, it often creates a loud squealing sound. This noise is created by the rubber running over the pulleys at an awkward angle. The slipped belt will need to be pushed back on or replaced.

Visibly Frayed, Cracked Belt

You can visually inspect your serpentine belt at any time. If it looks at all cracked or frayed, it might be time for a new one. Sometimes the upper groove layer can also start to separate from the belt, which is a sure sign it has to go.

Shallow Belt Grooves

One reason an aging belt might start slipping off the pulleys is that its grooves have worn down. The depth of a belt’s V-grooves can be measured with a belt gauge tool. If you don’t have a gauge, you can always ask a technician at your local dealership to measure the grooves for you.
