2020 Ford F-450

There are three F-450 trim models: the XL, XLT, and Lariat. The XL comes standard with front and rear tow hooks, black-painted front and rear bumpers, halogen headlights, and automatic high beams. Upgrade to the XLT for a little extra style, with a chrome grill, chrome bumpers, and a power-locking tailgate. The top-trim Lariat adds body-colored door handles and a special chrome grille.

There are also three F-450 engine options. The base engine, a 6.2-liter gas-powered V-8 that makes 385 horses and 430 pound-feet of torque, will be familiar to Super Duty fans. But the 2020 F-450 introduces a new gasoline-powered engine, a 7.3-liter V-8 that makes 430 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque. For maximum towing potential, check out the Power Stroke diesel engine, a heavy-duty beast that makes 475 horses and 1,050 pound-feet of torque.

The F-450's 10-speed automatic transmission – available with the optional engines – includes four selectable drive modes – Normal, Tow/Haul, Eco, and Deep Sand/Snow. Tow/Haul mode locks out higher gears to improve performance as you move heavy-duty payloads. Equipped for gooseneck trailering, the heavy-duty F-450 can tow best-in-class loads of 37,000 pounds. With fifth-wheel trailers, this pickup maxes out at 32,500 pounds. In terms of conventional towing, the F-450 maintains its place at the top of the heavy-duty heap, towing max loads of 24,200 pounds.

Move up the trim hierarchy for increasing comfort and convenience. Inside the F-450 XL, you'll find standard air conditioning, easy-to-clean vinyl floor mats, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The FordPass system lets you access F-450 features, including door locks, via smartphone app.

The XLT is a little savvier. It comes standard with the Sync 3 infotainment system, which adds an 8-inch touch-screen interface and smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Instead of vinyl seats, the XLT comes standard with cloth upholstery.

In the top-of-the-line F-450 Lariat, leather upholstery and 10-way power-adjustable front seats optimize your comfort. The Lariat also offers a wide range of upscale options including heating and ventilation for the front seats.

Every Ford F-450 comes standard with Ford's post-crash alert system, which uses a compatible cellphone to automatically dial 9-1-1 after a collision. The standard rearview camera maximizes visibility as you back out of a tight spot or align your F-450 with a trailer hitch. Options include a blind-spot monitor that takes the length of your trailer into account, minimizing mistakes as you switch lanes. Shoppers can also add the pre-collision assist system, which includes automatic emergency braking.
