Trim Levels (Exterior)
The Explorer comes in five different well-equipped trims. The base has 18-inch wheels and LED low beam headlights. The XLT adds interior upgrades, while the Sport comes with a blacked-out grille, a towing package, and a sport-tuned suspension. The Limited trim makes the optional safety features from the lower trims standard, and it adds a hands-free power liftgate, while the Platinum model adds a panoramic sunroof.
Engine (Power)
The base engine for the 2019 Explorer is a 3.5-liter V-6 that makes 290 horsepower and gets 255 pound-feet of torque, and Ford offers the option for a 2.3-liter turbo four-cylinder that will generate 280 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The Sport model has an even more powerful 3.5-liter V-6 with 365 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. All the engines get a six-speed automatic transmission and come standard with front-wheel drive, with all-wheel-drive offered an available option.
Performance
This SUV has plenty of power no matter which trim or engine you have. Every engine provides plenty of passing power and will get the Explorer up to highway speed in no time, but the powerful 350-horsepower V-6 will get you there in just 6.3 seconds. The Sport comes with a four-wheel drive system that has a Terrain Management system making it the best option for any off-road driving. The stronger V-6 is also the best choice for drivers who plan on towing, and will easily handle a mid-size boat or trailer.
Interior
The standard seating configuration is for seven. Opting for the second-row captain's chairs reduces seating to six, but increases comfort. The base comes with a power-adjustable driver's seat, and stepping up to the higher trims adds features such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel and leather upholstery in the Limited and above, along with heated and ventilated front seats, and a power-folding third-row seat. The top-level Platinum model comes standard with premium leather seats, power-adjustable pedals, and a leather-covered dashboard.
Standard technology starts with a 4.2-inch central display screen, Bluetooth, and the Ford Sync voice command system. Just one step up to the XLT gets you the option for an 8-inch touch screen, Sync 3, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and more USB ports. An upgraded stereo system is also available.
Safety Features
You'll get plenty of standard and optional safety features in the Explorer. All trims come with a rearview camera, and the XLT offers the option for the Safe and Smart package with adaptive cruise control, forward collision alert, automatic windshield wipers, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keep assist. The Platinum makes this package standard, and it also adds an automated parking system. The XLT and above also come standard with rear parking sensors and inflatable rear seat belts.
